One of the facts of life living where we do is that our lake will from time to time have alligators. Common sense is that you be vigilant when in areas close to the edge of our lake or pond and take equal care with children and pets. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources will send hunters out to attempt to capture them, but not anything under 4 feet (48") from head to tail. It should also be noted that they are not always successful in capturing them. Indeed, they may have moved on to another location. When reporting it's helpful to have a picture containing some background to help estimate its size.
